I have been reading a book about faith. In one of the chapters, the author suggested that when I find myself in a bind that I shouldn’t worry because when I face insurmountable enemies, God will fight for me. The author gave several examples from the Bible. Yet, it really didn’t sit well with me. I wasn’t really sure why until today.
I have often thought in our culture that we turn to fighting immediately and believe that is the only choice. However, when I look at this author’s examples, I see something different than he does. When I am in a bind and face insurmountable enemies, the Bible teaches me to trust in God and to not fight. I am taught that fighting isn’t the answer.
I recently heard a comedian suggest that the NRA fight the military to show that they could rise up against the government if they needed to like they did in the Revolutionary War. He suggested that it would prove that it would show that the NRA members have a right to keep their guns. Except that 100 NRA members against one guy with a drone with missiles isn’t a fair fight. It isn’t a fight at all. The guy with the drone is going to kill all the NRA members within seconds. That’s what this author’s “examples” of God fighting for other people were. God engaging in fights with the enemy isn’t really a fight at all. What could all the armies of humanity combined even compare to the almighty power of God? There is no army or weapon ever devised that will ever come close to even a fraction of the power of God. If God tells me not to fight and to trust in Him, then of course, I will. Even if it means that I should suffer at the hand’s of my enemies, I will do whatever God ask of me because that is faith.
When Moses had the Egyptian army on one side and the Red Sea on the other, Moses didn’t fight. He acted as a servant of God. However, I think the most important example of what I am writing about is Jesus. Jesus was surrounded by people who were hurting him and wanted to kill him. Yet He didn’t fight back. In the garden, He asked God to take the cup from Him, but He also asked for God’s will to be done. And so, God’s plan was done, and Jesus became my Savior. Jesus could have called all the armies of angels in Heaven to make men bow down to Him, He could have made all the angels in Heaven stop the beating and the crucifixion, but He didn’t.
I hear people say, “How can God let such awful things happen without intervening? How can such things be in His plan?” My answer is to have faith. Yes, unthinkable acts happen. Horrible atrocities that sadden my spirit and soul, but God asks me to trust in Him. If Jesus can take on the sins of the world, then I know I can trust in God. I know that I try to follow His commandments and hope that His plan will be worth my life.
My faith saved me. May God’s peace reside in all of our hearts.
