My husband was complaining about the other drivers on the road. I decided to be funny and say that he was being his own self-fulfilling prophecy. I told him that since he had already decided that the other drivers were bad drivers, he was looking for them to make mistakes and ready for him to react to that instead of driving more defensively so that he could anticipate what was coming next and be more alert to unusual movements from the other motorists. In other words, instead of seeing other people as the problem, he could see the solution within himself.
As I was saying it, I realized that this idea could be applied to everyday life and faith. It is so easy to get frustrated with the way things work or with people in general. However, if instead of being my own self-fulling prophecy and getting frustrating with a world I perceive as frustrating, I could realize that the answer comes from within. The world is only as frustrating as I allow it to be. Instead of perceiving situations and allowing them to become my perception, I should realize that I have the power within myself to make changes to better my world. If I want change, then I shouldn’t look outside of myself, the first place I need to look is within. The problem isn’t everyone else, the problem is me. If I am willing to make myself a better human being, then I can make the world a better place.
My faith saved me. May God’s peace reside in all of our hearts.
