Sometimes dogs can teach us some of the greatest lessons in life. I often write about how life is like treading water. If I fight against life, kicking and paddling to stay afloat, then I will become tired and drained quickly feeling hopeless about my chances. However, if I just let my body flow with the water and float, then my body naturally floats and with a little faith, I know that I will be okay.
Today, my anxious dog reinforced that same lesson. My husband and I bought him a new elevated feeding dish. I set it up and tried to coax him to eat out of it. He didn’t want to have anything to do with it. He actually acted like I was trying to trick him into some kind of trap. Instead, I just put some food into the dish and then I walked away. I let him know it was there and I let him come to it on his own time without my trying to force him. It took a little while, but eventually, he went to the dish and got his food.
It’s a great lesson in realizing that there are thing that I can control and things that I can’t control. I can buy him an elevated dish, but I can force him to eat out of it. The only thing I can do is provide him with food and let him do the rest. Sometimes, I just have to sit back, flow with life, and have a little faith.
My faith saved me. May God’s peace reside in all of our hearts.
