Today is the feast day of Our Lady of Guadalupe. I never really paid much attention to the day before because of my mother wanting to make it all about her. However, in the last few years, I have come to learn more about indigenous people because of my husband’s Choctaw heritage. The story of Our Lady of Guadalupe is special because it shows that even those who seem to have been forgotten are not forgotten by God.
Recently, I had a chance to visit the Choctaw cultural center in Durant, Oklahoma. I saw an exhibit on the Trail of Tears. It saddened my heart to see the suffering that those people went through. I know that there are others all over the world who suffer each day due to different circumstances such as war, poverty, or any number of tragedies.
I pray all the time knowing that they are people who are suffering. I know that I can’t end all the suffering in the world, but I know that each person can make small changes that can make little differences. On a day like today, I want to make a special prayer for the indigenous people of the Americas. They have had so much to endure and today is a day to remember that God has not forgotten them. He knows their suffering and He is with them. Whenever I see a rose, I remember that.
My faith saved me. My God’s peace reside in all of our hearts.
