I have been trying to work on my writing today and I find it difficult because I put too much pressure on myself. I feel like I must get tons of stuff done and have lots of work to show for my efforts, which is so counterproductive especially when trying to do an artistic pursuit. The absolute best way to produce art is to let yourself be in the moment and just feel a sense of zen.
In the story of Genesis, I don’t think God set a timer and told Himself that He had to be done in seven days. He just created the world in His own time. God’s example should be my example.
I have been thinking a lot about story telling since attending the writers conference. People talk about what stories mean, they talk about whether or not stories are true, but I’ve been noticing that not many people talk about why we tell the stories that we do.
The Bible is full of stories about God. There are scholars who dedicate years and years of their lives to interpreting what those stories mean. Other people debate about whether or not the stories of the Bible are fact or fiction. And yet, very few people ask why we share the stories of the Bible with each other.
For me, I don’t think it matters if the stories are true or not. I think we should be asking why we share the stories. After all, these are stories that were written thousands of years ago and yet, they are told and retold. Whether they are true, fact or fiction, these stories tell something about who we are and maybe something about who we want to be.
My faith saved me. May God’s peace reside in all of our hearts.
