Duality

I was reading yesterday about the gods and goddess of different cultures and civilizations of the world when it occurred to me that there was a duality that I had completely missed.  I have always seen God as a creator.  However, there’s a duality there of creator and destroyer.  If I believe that God transcends the dualities, then could God be a destroyer as well?

I thought about the universe itself.  I am not an astronomer or astrophysicist, but I do know that creation and destruction occur in the universe all the time.  Black holes are one example of a destructive force in the universe.  I also know that stars eventually go supernova and then expire becoming white dwarfs.  That means that sometime, our own sun, which is a star, will do the same.  When it does, our solar system will never be the same.  The earth probably will no longer be able to sustain life.  If the universe was created with The Big Bang and everything is expanding, then at some point it will contract.   My point is that it is true that God who created this universe also will destroy all or part of it as part of it’s creation.  When the dualities are transcended, the line between creation and destruction no longer exists.

I hadn’t seen this truth before.  Yet when I see it now, I realize that being able to understand who God is takes more than a lifetime.  The more I think I understand, the less I know.  God is everything and nothing all at the same time.  He is the Alpha and Omega.  He transcends the meaning of everything that I can understand.  I could take a lifetime to try to understand it and I will, but I won’t ever reach my goal, just like Sisyphus.   And yet, reaching the goal isn’t the point.  The point is being able use the little understanding that I have to take that leap of faith to trust in God’s plan, a plan I’ll never know, and to try my very best to live the best life and can and never take it for granted.

My faith saved me.  May God’s peace reside in all of our hearts.
